Spain and Argentina meet in New Jersey for the biggest prize in international football. It completes a remarkable Super Sunday for Irish sports fans, with Galway facing Limerick in the afternoon before attention turns to the World Cup final. Spain arrive on a 37-match unbeaten run, while Argentina are one victory from retaining the trophy.

Spain – Form & Key Players
Spain have reached their first World Cup final since winning the competition in 2010 with the tournament’s strongest defensive record.
Luis de la Fuente’s side are unbeaten across seven matches in the United States, recording six wins and one draw while conceding only once. They are now unbeaten in 37 consecutive matches.
Their knockout path has been even more convincing. Spain defeated Austria 3-0 in the round of 32, edged Portugal 1-0 and overcame Belgium 2-1 before producing their best performance of the tournament in a 2-0 semi-final win over France.
Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot, while Pedro Porro added the second after half-time. France were largely prevented from creating clear opportunities as Spain controlled midfield and protected their penalty area.
Lamine Yamal remains central to Spain’s ability to stretch opponents and create space, although his importance should not be measured only through goals and assists. His movement contributed directly to the penalty against France.
Oyarzabal provides intelligent movement through the centre, while Mikel Merino has strengthened Spain’s options from the bench after scoring the late winner against Belgium.
Rodri has regained his 2022/23 form after injuries, and he is arguably one of the best midfielders in the tournament.
Argentina – Form & Key Players
Argentina are attempting to become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to retain the World Cup. Lionel Scaloni’s defending champions have won all seven matches at this tournament and are unbeaten in their last 13 World Cup fixtures, but their route to the final has required considerably more resilience than Spain’s.
They have scored a tournament-leading 19 goals while conceding six goals during the knockout rounds.
The Albiceleste beat Cape Verde and Egypt by identical 3-2 scorelines before defeating Switzerland 3-1 after extra time in the quarter-finals. Their semi-final against England provided the clearest example of their survival instinct. Argentina trailed from the 55th minute until Enzo Fernández equalised in the 85th. Lautaro Martínez then headed in the winner during stoppage time, with Lionel Messi creating both goals.
Messi enters the final with eight goals at the 2026 tournament and a men’s World Cup record of 21 career goals. He has also reached 12 World Cup assists after setting up both goals against England.
At 39, he no longer presses continuously or dominates every minute, but Argentina have used him carefully enough to preserve his influence for decisive phases. He has played every minute of their four knockout matches.
Behind him, Fernández offers shooting quality from midfield, while Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez provide different attacking options. Emiliano Martínez also brings extensive experience of knockout football and penalty shoot-outs, an important consideration if the final remains level.
Spain vs Argentina Prediction
Prediction: Spain to win at 2.41
My preference is Spain to win in 90 minutes. Argentina have repeatedly shown that they remain dangerous when matches become chaotic, but Spain appear better equipped to control the rhythm from the opening stages.
De la Fuente’s team have conceded only one goal in seven matches and restricted a powerful France attack throughout the semi-final. Their midfield structure should allow Rodri and his supporting players to limit the spaces in which Messi receives possession, while Spain’s width can test Argentina’s full-backs and force their forwards to spend more time defending.
There is clear risk in opposing the defending champions, particularly after Argentina scored twice after the 84th minute against England.
However, Spain have looked more complete across the tournament, combining defensive stability with several routes to goal.
Spain vs Argentina Betting Angle
Betting Angle: Under 3.5 goals
Under 3.5 goals is my alternative selection for the final. Spain have conceded only once, and their knockout victories over Portugal and France produced one and two total goals respectively. Their priority is likely to be controlling transitions rather than allowing an open contest against Messi, Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez.
Argentina’s recent knockout matches have been higher-scoring, but the circumstances of a final are different. Scaloni’s side are unlikely to attack recklessly against a Spain team capable of controlling possession for long spells.
Argentina may instead defend in a compact shape, protect central areas and wait for moments when Messi can release a runner.
The match could become more expansive after the opening goal, but a 1-0, 2-0, 1-1 or 2-1 scoreline would all settle this selection successfully. Spain’s defensive record and Argentina’s likely respect for their opponents make fewer than four goals a reasonable option.
