A big showdown of the Philadelphia Eagles vs Kansas City Chiefs is set for Super Bowl LIX from the Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday. There’s extra interest riding on this one because the Chiefs are potentially on the brink of writing themselves into the NFL record books as the first team ever to win three consecutive Super Bowl titles.

It’s also a rematch of the 2023 Super Bowl, which was one of the best editions in recent history, as the Chiefs staged a late comeback in the fourth quarter to sneak victory by three points. It was that victory which put them on the road for this chance of a historic three-peat – but can they complete the job?

Full details of Super Bowl LIX can be found here, from viewing times to some of the history surrounding the match and of course, the famous halftime show.

Philadelphia Eagles: Can Eagles Soar To Second Super Bowl Success?

The Philadelphia Eagles have made four previous appearances in the Super Bowl, the first of which was in 1981 when they suffered a loss against Oakland. After losing to the New England Patriots in 2005 on their second attempt, they would finally get themselves over the line thirteen years later.

The Eagles landed their first Super Bowl title in 2018 with a 41-33 victory over the New England Patriots, as Quarterback Nick Foles threw them into the lead with just over two minutes left on the clock.

Their fourth appearance in the Super Bowl happened in 2023 when they took on the mighty Kansas City Chiefs. The Eagles had looked in total control throughout the match, building a seven-point lead going into the final quarter. But they couldn’t quite hold out and dramatically fell as the Chiefs scored a 27-yard field goal with eight seconds left.

The Road To Super Bowl 2025

The Eagles took a while to get going this season, falling to a W2 L2 record in their first four games, one of which was in São Paulo, Brazil as the NFL hosted an international game there. Their Week 5 bye, however, gave them a chance to reboot and they came back strongly afterwards, stringing together a 10-match winning streak.

That run was ended just before Christmas in a narrow loss away at the Washington Commanders, but the Eagles bounced back to win their final two games of the regular season, leaving them top of the NFC East and second overall in the Conference. Their 14-3 record put them through to the Wild Card Playoff Round.

The Eagles had no trouble easing past the Green Bay Packers in that Wild Card round, before dispatching the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round. With the NFC’s top seeds, the Detroit Lions suffering a shock early Playoff exit, the Eagles instead met divisional rivals the Washington Commanders in the Championship match. In it, Philadelphia blitzed their opponents 55-23, a record points total for a conference championship game win.

Key Players To Watch

Saquon Barkley is one of the top running backs in the league at the moment and will be a force to be reckoned with. Barkley has had 14 games during this campaign where he has surpassed 100 rushing yards and all after being picked up as a Free Agent when his former team (New York Giants) let him go. It will be his 28th birthday on Sunday as well, so he could celebrate in style by leading his team to the title.

The Eagles’ key wide receivers, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are going to need big games too, and the more they can trouble the Chiefs’ defensive line early on, the more space they’ll open up for Barkley. Keep an eye on the hard-hitting Jalen Carter in the Eagles’ defensive line who will be expected to cause all kinds of disruption.

Kansas City Chiefs – Ready To Carve Out History?

The Kansas City Chiefs’ first Super Bowl appearance was in 1967 which ended in a loss to the Green Bay Packers, before they went on to be crowned champions for the first time in a 1970 victory over the Minnesota Vikings.

Armed with a star young quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs ended their 50-year wait for further Super Bowl success, when they squared off against the San Francisco 49ers in 2020. In it, Mahomes posted three touchdowns inside the final seven minutes to lead the Chiefs to a 31-20 victory.

The Chiefs were back on the big stage the following year against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They failed to post a single touchdown, however, as old master Tom Brady dominated the QB battle with Mahomes to give the Bucs a 31-9 victory.

But the Chiefs weren’t done as they were victorious in 2023’s high-scoring 38-35 Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles, and then they backed it up by successfully defending their crown last year against the 49ers, again by a three-point margin.

Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Record

Road To Super Bowl LIX

There were a few question marks about the Chiefs at the start of the season, as their powerhouse modern dynasty looked to be on shaky ground. For much of the early campaign they were on some shaky ground, not playing their best, but still somehow finding ways to win.

With the Detroit Lions rampaging in the East, the Kansas City Chiefs weren’t in a position to be Super Bowl favourites this season. But remarkably, despite a host of narrow one-score wins, and some close calls against Tampa Bay and Denver in November, they stretched out to a 9-0 record before their first loss of the season, which came at the Buffalo Bills.

But the Chiefs responded to that with a six-match winning streak, before, what was largely their reserve team, collapsed to a 38-0 blowout at the Denver Broncos in their final match of the regular season.

Kansas City finished top of the AFC West and their 15-2 record was the best in the AFC, giving them top seeding for the Playoffs. They eased past the Houston Texans in the Divisional round, before finding themselves in a tight tussle against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game. The Chiefs won it thanks to a field goal with 2:42 left on the clock.

Key Players To Watch

It’s Patrick Mahomes, of course. The NFL has been filled with great history makers throughout its history, but the megastar quarterback has a chance to stand among the greatest of the greats, by leading a team to three consecutive Super Bowl titles.

His uncanny ability to escape pressure and either find a pass or run himself is game-changing and often unstoppable. Mahomes’ key receiver is Travis Kelce who posted 97 regular season receptions. Expect him to get his hands on the ball plenty of times in the match, especially during the times when Mahomes comes under pressure.

Another key player for the Chiefs will be Chris Jones. The top defensive tackle, who has six quarterback sacks to his name this season, needs a huge performance to stop opponents like Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts.

Super Bowl LIX – What Can We Expect?

The Chiefs looked extremely wobbly in the first part of the season, but have since settled into a rhythm, looking more and more like themselves the longer the season has gone on. Mahomes is obviously the key for the Chiefs, but his offensive options aren’t as dynamic as the ones that he has led to success in previous Super Bowls. This is pressure of the highest degree, especially with the three-peat on the line, so look for him to lean heavily on receiver Travis Kelce, who has been on fire during the postseason.

Defence is arguably the stronger part of the Chiefs’ game, and they will need to be at their best here. The Eagles are probably going to come in with a big running game, where they will try and pound away at the Chiefs, which is what they did so effectively against the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship game.

The Chiefs are odds-on to win, but this doesn’t look like being a big, spectacular repeat of that stunning 2023 Super Bowl. It could be a little more pragmatic with the game being won by small margins on the ground, as opposed to long raids for big yardage in the air.
